Elisabeth was 4 months old when she lost her hearing after a high fever. We used home signs to communicate with her at first, then learned some sign language when she was 2½. At the age of four, she received her cochlear implant. We appreciated Dr. Peters and his staff very much for helping our Elisabeth to hear. She quickly began to imitate the peeping of her baby chicks to everyone’s delight! Now, a year later she hears the phone ring and the birds sing. Elisabeth says many words and the names of her family. She says short sentences like “take a bath”. She has always been a bright, happy girl and now she babbles away as she plays and learns at pre-school and home. We are so happy that we decided to give Elisabeth the implant and chance to hear. Thank you Dr. Peters and the Dallas Hearing Foundation for providing assistance with her cochlear implant related expenses.

At age 15 months, Melissa became ill with meningitis. Soon after, she was diagnosed with profound hearing loss. Hearing aids enabled her to hear sounds, but she could not understand words. She relied on sign language and lipreading in school. During her Sophomore year, Dr. Peters determined she was a CI candidate, but insurance would not cover it. We were told that DHF helps people who can’t afford services. Melissa got her CI and was activated on her 16th birthday. Her CI opened the door to a whole new world. Her hearing improved to a mild hearing loss. When I call her name, she answers. She hears birds chirping. She has a new love – music. I get chill bumps when I see her singing a song she’s listening to. Her speech continues to improve with auditory-verbal therapy. She is happier and more confident. God answered our prayers in finding Dr. Peters and DHF. We are forever grateful to them for making Melissa’s dream come true.

Meghana’s deafness was diagnosed at 8 months of age in India and she was fitted with hearing aids. We moved to the US in 2006 and were very concerned about her communication delay. One day we heard about Dr.Peters and we were very impressed with everyone on his team: they knew exactly what we were going through. We started working with Linda Daniel, MS, MA, Cert. Auditory-Verbal Therapist: she taught me how to do therapy with my daughter at home. Meghana began showing more progress than she had in the past 3 years. She received a cochlear implant this summer and after just 3 months of hearing, Meghana’s progress is amazing. Now she is trying to talk in sentences, understands almost everything we say and can write her name. Now we want an implant for her other ear. I can’t thank Dr. Peters, Linda Daniel, Leslie Lianos, MS Lic. Audiologist, and Debbie Spicer enough. Today we are happy because of them.

We began using sign language with Jenna during her infancy because we didn’t think she would ever hear or speak. When she was four years old we moved to Dallas so Jenna could receive a cochlear implant from Dr. Peters and Auditory-Verbal therapy from Linda Daniel. Jenna was implanted in March 2005. After a year and a half of hearing, therapy and following our home program, Jenna has amazed us all. She frequently tries to talk while she signs and occasionally talks without using sign language. She is growing in her ability to understand our speech without sign. She is now speaking in some three and four word sentences and is learning to read and write. We are thrilled with her progress and thanks to Dr. Peters and Linda Daniel we have a completely new vision for Jenna’s future.

To see him cry when we turned on the implant was the greatest day of my life and motivated Lori and me to press on in our journey to bring Randell into the hearing world. Continue reading →

In 2002, we were blessed with a beautiful baby boy named Randell.

A short time later, we found out our son was profoundly deaf. We were overwhelmed, but determined to give him the best life possible. After many hours of research and meetings with medical doctors and professionals, we were introduced to the cochlear implant as a possible option for Randell. After being fitted for hearing aids, we immediately met with ECI and immersed Randell in many types of therapy. We were of the belief, and still are, that we needed to commit to incorporating every therapeutic option possible into the development of our son and determine, as you go, what is working and what is not working. The therapy he received in the beginning developed Randell’s visual cognitive ability greatly and that benefits him today. We continued with the therapy for the entire year leading up to Randell’s implantation. I genuinely believe this laid the foundation of Randell’s strong cognitive ability today and our philosophy in stewarding Randell.

We were implanted with the first implant shortly after Randell’s first birthday. To see him cry when we turned on the implant was the greatest day of my life and motivated Lori and me to press on in our journey to bring Randell into the hearing world. We immediately started auditory verbal speech therapy. We wanted Randell to benefit completely from the cochlear implant technology. We went three times a week and immersed him in language…Lori would work with him every day through tracking and reading to him. We felt it was important to get Randell into a school curriculum and socialization so he would be challenged to apply the skill of listening in a real environment. Randell’s visual abilities allowed him the opportunity to pick up on things he would have missed, while allowing his listening and hearing abilities to catch up.

After a great experience at the Hearing School of the Southwest, we made a very tough decision to put Randell in the mainstream classroom. This was the toughest and best decision we ever made because, there, Randell was around speaking children and was challenged to apply the therapy he was going through at the time. It was also half way into the school year when we were informed about how cognitively gifted Randell was for being deaf and having not heard for an entire year. Our anxiety of having placed Randell in a mainstream classroom, with the frustration he might experience, was a concern that we did not have to face. Through this whole process, we kept faith that God would open the doors he wanted us to go through. After Randell’s preschool experience, we were faced with where we were going to place Randell for elementary school. We met with professionals who encouraged us not to put him in a college preparatory environment because it would only damage his confidence. One night I remember telling Lori that we have always put Randell in the best environments and God has always seen him through. At that time, the best and most complete education was being offered by Trinity Christian Academy. After applying and praying for acceptance, our prayers were answered…we were accepted. Randell has been at TCA for 2 years and continues to excel in a challenging college preparatory environment and is demonstrating a strong athletic ability in sports. I give thanks to God everyday for having placed Randell in our lives. Seven years ago on the hospital floor if someone had shown me a picture of where we are today, I would have been hard pressed to believe it. Thanks to God and the many people, professionals and organizations, like the Dallas Hearing Foundation, God has blessed us with through our journey, and because of those blessings, we are in a wonderful place today.

For the last 20 years I have not been able to hear very well and have worn Hearing Aids. I woke up one morning and could not hear anything in my right ear. I was advised to see Dr. Robert Peters who recommended a Cochlear Implant; I went through this procedure and could hear much better, although I would later have to have a Cochlear Implant in the left ear; That’s is when the miracle happened! I could hear more than I can ever remember hearing. I can hear the birds sing, the dogs barking, rain, wind in the trees. I needed this to happen for me. While I was going through this I lost my eyesight to Macular Degeneration. Now I can hear the traffic noises and the tapping of the cane tells me where I am going. I can talk to and understand people. That’s a great feeling and I am very grateful.

Piper was born on May 23, 2008. She was a beautiful 5lb. 6oz ANGEL! It was a very bittersweet day. She was finally here, but struggling to survive. She had a cleft in her soft palate, causing her difficulty in feeding and maintaining her oxygen levels. The doctors transferred her to the NICU and began running tests. They decided that ambilical cord failure, combined with a syndrome was probably the culprit. It was the most devastating experience our lives.

To date, Piper has been diagnosed with profound bilateral hearing loss, Pierre Robin Sequence, respiratory distress syndrome, cortical vision impairment, and Cerebral Palsy. She has no hearing and damaged sight. This has created a huge delay in her physical and mental development. We heard of the leaps and bounds they are making in improving hearing in children using cochlear implants, and we decided that would be the direction we would take. A specialist referred us to Dr. Robert Peters and assured us that his team is the very best. The help and direction we received began as early as our first visit. The auditory-verbal therapist, Linda Daniel noticed right way that Piper was displaying signs of vestibular issues and referred us to an occupational therapist that specializes in children with balance problems and varied muscle tone. Our insurance didn’t cover the specialist, but the Dallas Hearing Foundation stepped in and covers the cost of this treatment Piper so desperately needs. She began to improve right away – rolling over, sitting, holding herself up and looking around with purpose. It was all very new and exciting!

Piper received her cochlear implant, and is now smiling at us and laughing when we do. Her father and I still get teary-eyed when we watch her look around in wonderment and smile when she hears our voices. Her therapists are astonished by the almost immediate change in her and her attitude towards the new world that has been opened up to her. She has been given the gift of a new beginning and a chance to lead a healthy life. To be able to hear us tell her we love her, to run and play because her balance is improving, and especially to be safe. Imagine your child not being able to hear a security alarm, smoke detector, or storm siren. Piper now has the options to do so many new things that were not previously available to her, and we cannot imagine other children not being given the same opportunity.

By supporting the Dallas Hearing Foundation, you can change lives and quite possibly save them!

Our daughter, Penelope, received her first cochlear implant at the age of 3½ and the second implant two years later. Immediately after the first implant was activated, she started twice weekly sessions of Auditory-Verbal Therapy with Jilinda Robinson at HEAR In Dallas. With hearing and the help she receives from her therapist, Penelope’s speech and vocabulary are improving and she is learning to understand many things our family talks about. Penelope loves to listen to music and looks forward to her Hip Hop dance class each week. We are so happy with her progress. Our lives have changed in so many positive ways now that she can hear and is learning to talk. We are so blessed with everyone that has helped us.

Born deaf, Christian learned to communicate in sign and speech. When he began to babble more, his hearing was re-evaluated. After a trial period with a BAHA, and consultations with Dr. Robert Peters and Linda Daniel, Christian became a candidate for an implant.

Christian seemed a happy and assertive child. Speaking, though, took great effort. While pursing his lips to shape sounds, his eyes would roll upwards, searching for expression. Aware of the implant’s controversy, his parents wanted to honor their duty to him and to God. Through prayer his parents realized that, with the implant, Christian would become a Deaf child who could hear.
