Years ago, the hearing journey for our son Matthew led us to Dr. Bob Peters. As new parents of a child diagnosed with profound bilateral hearing loss, we were in a state of shock and anxious to help our son. After trying hearing aids for several months with little result, at 20 months old, our son Matthew received his cochlear implant from Dr. Peters in 2002. With the support of many professionals, access to a deaf/oral pre-school classroom and several years of private speech therapy, Matthew quickly caught up with his peers and was mainstreamed in school by the time he attended kindergarten. Many years later, he is now a successful college student at SMU studying computer science and playing bass in the orchestra.
I became aware of Dallas Hearing Foundation through Dr. Peters. I saw what Dr. Peters and the founders of DHF were doing to bring this amazing technology to families who could not otherwise afford it. I had to become involved. I initially supported DHF as a contributor, then a fundraising volunteer and later joined the Board.
Dallas Hearing Foundation is dedicated to helping individuals pursue a life without limits. As a Board, we make a commitment to our donors to use your gifts in a responsible way and keep our administrative costs to a minimum. As a result, we are able to help more and more people every year. Our family is proud to support Dallas Hearing Foundation and celebrate its 20+ years of helping people learn to listen and speak.
